August 10, 2025 – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Bell Tower & Plaster Project

Josh D, a 17-year-old senior at Lewis and Clark High School and dedicated member of St. Ann’s parish and the Boy Scouts, is pursuing his Eagle Scout rank by giving back to the church community that has been a staple to him for the past six years. With a group of fellow scouts and volunteers, Josh plans on restoring St. Ann’s long-silent bell, which has been unusable due to a rotted ceiling, frayed rope, and general disrepair. Beyond just restoring the bell mechanism, Josh also plans to repair and repaint damaged interior walls and ceilings throughout the sanctuary, particularly areas with cracked plaster near the Stations of the Cross and the portico. Josh hopes to raise $6000 over the next week. He will be attending both masses this weekend where you can give your contribution, or funds can be given through the parish (make sure to specify that this money is for the project!)  Thank you!

Sunday Lunch Program

The Sunday Lunch Program serves a free meal every Sunday afternoon in the St. Ann parish hall. The food for the meals they serve primarily comes from a program at 2nd Harvest, and the Sunday Lunch leaders have to keep careful track of the food they receive and what is served. Last Sunday when the St. Ann crew arrived to cook, they found that the fish they were planning to use for the meal was not in the Sunday Lunch freezer.  Not only did this mean the cooks had to quickly change their menu, but it’s possible they will have to pay 2nd Harvest for the fish since it wasn’t served.  We’d like to remind parishioners that the food in the large storeroom in the parish hall – on shelves and in the refrigerators and freezers – belongs to the Sunday Lunch Program, and should not be taken or used by parishioners or visitors. St. Ann has its own storage closets and a fridge in the kitchen for parish use.

2nd Collection

On the 2nd weekend of each month we take up a special collection at the end of each Mass to help those in need in our neighborhood and our parish.  Thanks to your past generosity, we have been able to help many of our neighbors with utility bills, and these neighbors often voice just how grateful they are for the help from our community.  Thank you!

Salam Maria fundraiser

There is a fundraiser started by a member of the Swahili community to help youth in rural Kenya. The book Salam Maria is available for a $10 donation in the front pew of the church, or in the parish office.  Although the name of the book is in Swahili, the book is in English.

Father Patrick Shares Memories About Cardinal Otunga

While in Nairobi, Fr. Patrick joined his friend Archbishop Philip Anyoro of the Nairobi Archdiocese along with Steve & Tresa from St. Ann parish to share his memories and experiences with Cardinal Otunga,. A video of the interview is below:

Hot Weather Resources

Please check out the collection of flyers in the entry of the church, shared in the Creation Care Corner in the last few virtual bulletins. These flyers have information about the differences between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, protecting yourself from wildfire smoke, how to make a box fan air filter, and how to stay cool at home during hot summer weather. This information is being shared with us by the Gonzaga University Climate Institute, who in the last few years have conducted research surrounding how the Spokane community responds to extreme heat and wildfire smoke.

“The effects of climate change are borne by the most vulnerable people, whether at home or around the world.”  Bishops of the United States, quoted by Pope Francis in Laudate Deum.  (3)

Are you interested in volunteering with the Gonzaga Climate Institute?

As the need to address the climate crisis grows, the Climate Institute is expanding the tools we have for addressing it. With the goal of engaging community members in hands-on solution building, we are developing an email list we can use to contact community members interested in potentially volunteering their time in support of our work. At a time when it’s hard to know how to make a real difference, this will be an opportunity to engage in locally based solutions with visible and fulfilling results. At this time, we expect volunteer opportunities to be geographically limited to in or around Spokane County.

The details of future volunteering opportunities are yet to be organized and announced, but some potential opportunities could include:

  •  Supporting our research by helping collect survey responses on the ground.
  • Canvassing your neighborhood to hand out educational materials on extreme heat and wildfire smoke safety.
  • Participating in a block leader program to coordinate communication amongst your neighbors during extreme heat or wildfire smoke events.
  • Checking on vulnerable neighbors during heat events in a “heat buddies” type program.
  • Providing transportation to resilience hubs for those who are mobility limited and need access to cooling or cleaner air.

If you are interested, please contact  Gonzaga Climate Institute Climate-institute@gonzaga.edu

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing these reflections with us.

Franciscan Corner

The journey and the dream: Was it all a dream? Did he really hear God tell him to go rebuild the church? Does God talk to us in dreams?  Joseph in the Hebrew Scripture had a dream and was an interpreter of dreams. The Magi had a dream and went home a different way.  St. Joseph had a dream and took the child and his mother into Egypt and because of another dream brought them back to Nazareth. So yes, God does use  to get his message out. So Francis listened and what he heard was not a sleeping dream but a dream of the heart.  A dream of being an instrument of peace, a dream of rebuilding the church, the people of God. Do you have dreams, sleeping dreams or dreams of the heart? Do you ever wonder if God is speaking to you in those dreams? With every journey there is a dream–a sleeping or a heart dream. Consider what God might be saying to you in your dreams.

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us.
