September 21, 2025 – 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Thank you, Matthew 25 Ministry!

A big thank you to all of the Matthew 25 Ministry members for their work in putting together the multi-faith peace prayer vigil last Sunday in front of the Federal Building.  It was well attended, and filled with powerful prayers and songs.  It was also a chance for community members from across Spokane to connect.

If you are interested in being a part of the Matthew 25 Ministry, the group meets after Mass on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Sacramental Prep

At St. Ann we do sacramental prep for 1st Holy Communion and Confirmation every other year.  We are in the process of setting a time this spring for those sacraments. If you have a child who is ready to receive these sacraments please contact the parish office so we can submit our request  to the bishop’s office by Oct 1.

Meatless Potluck – October 4

Join the Creation Care Team and St. Ann parishioners for a meatless potluck to celebrate the end of the Season of Creation and the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.  Bring a meatless dish to share along with the recipe so each of us can collect new meatless recipes, as we work to cut back on the amount of meat consumed to care for creation.

Thank you, St. Ann!

Thank you to all those who donated to the special collection for Gaza. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to send $836 to Catholic Relief Services to support their work in Gaza.  If you would still  like to make a donation, you can do so directly online here:

https://www.crs.org/where-we-work/middle-east-north-africa/jerusalem-west-bank-and-gaza

Thank you to the youth and adults from our African community who made samosas to sell as a fundraiser for the bell tower project. They were able to raise over $350 from the sale of the samosas after Mass on September 7th.  Thanks to the support of the community of time and money for Josh’s scout community project, the work on the bell tower is complete, and work on plaster repair is due to begin in October.

Thank you also to everyone who signed the cards for Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis – we mailed off 4 cards with messages of support and prayers to that community.

Annual Catholic Appeal

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal so far. Your gift on behalf of St. Ann is deeply appreciated. This year our parish has a goal of raising $39,653.00 for the Appeal. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the Annual Catholic Appeal this year, and please mark your donation for St. Ann Spokane so that your donation goes towards our goal. If you did not receive a donation envelope in the mail, we have extra envelopes available in the church.

Rosary for Peace – October 11

Contact the St. Ann office at 509 535-3031 or Denise at 406 498-4811 for more information, or to volunteer to help with the rosary.

Saint Icons

Parishioner Jim Bates has created a number of Saint Icons for members of the St. Ann Swahili community, and they have extra icons they would like to share with the parish.  If you would like one, they are in the front pew of the church. Thank you, Jim, for sharing these beautiful pieces of art with our community!

Salam Maria fundraiser

The book “Salam Maria” – which is “Hail Mary” in Swahili – is available for a $10 donation in the front pew of the church, or in the parish office.  This fundraiser was started by Grace, a member of the Swahili community, and the money raised will go towards helping youth in rural Kenya.  Although the title of the book is in Swahili, the book is in English and is an informative resource for praying the rosary.

Creation Care Corner

The entire church throughout the world celebrates the Season of Creation.  Many dioceses make great efforts through these five weeks.  At Saint Ann, we will do just one event. That event will be the meatless potluck after the Saturday evening mass, on the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, October 4th.  The following explains more about why we focus on this, because it is something we each can do.

Meat production, particularly on the scale required to meet global demand, significantly contributes to environmental degradation, through greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation. Its impact is a multifaceted challenge, requiring comprehensive solutions to mitigate its effects on our planet.

Meat production is a substantial contributor to greenhouse gases, primarily through these three ways:

  • methane is produced by livestock, particularly ruminants like cattle during digestion. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a significantly higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.
  • Nitrous oxide is emitted from fertilizers used in feed production and from manure management. This gas has an even higher global warming potential than methane and remains in the atmosphere for a long time.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions arise from deforestation, transportation of livestock and feed, and the energy intensive processes involved in processing and packaging meats. Beef has the highest carbon footprint.

For Our Common Home Lecture Series…Fall 2025

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing these reflections with us.

Franciscan Corner

Francis, what shall we call you, how do we describe you? Shall we call you Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone? Francesco (“the Frenchman”)? Poverello (“the Poor One”? or shall we describe you as “a man of poverty,” “a man of peace,” a lover of the outcast, “a man who loves and protects creation, a “holy fool” who embraced simplicity and humility, the patron saint of animals and ecology, the founder of the Franciscan order, or a mystic and mirror of Christ? We have seen and described you through all these names. The name that best describes you, however, is “Saint Francis.” You became what you loved. In our own vocations, on the path we have chosen, may we be true followers of Jesus and become what we love.

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us.
