January 26, 2025 – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Social Justice Ministry Education Series

The Social Justice Ministry is also putting together an education series called “A Change is Gonna Come” – a song rooted in sorrow and hope.  This series will begin on Sunday, January 26 with a screening of a short film called Mother Kuskokwim, followed by discussion, over in the parish house after Mass.  This film is a short documentary on how climate change affects a Native Alaskan community located in the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta.  The education series will continue in February with a two part talk about the issue of Christian Nationalism on Sunday February 2nd and 16th.

Community Wine Tasting – January 18

Catholic Schools Week – January 26 – February 1

This year’s collection will be used for tuition assistance in our K-8 Catholic schools. All contributions, no matter the amount, will help to shape future leaders of the Church.

A donation envelope will be  included with the letter from Bishop Daly. Extra envelopes can be found next to th e bulletins next week.  Please prayerfully consider a financial contribution to this year’s Catholic School Collection. Thank you.

Creation Care Corner

“Given the real potential for a misuse of human abilities, individual states can no longer ignore their responsibility for planning, coordination, oversight and enforcement within their respective borders.  How can a society plan and protect its future amid constantly developing technological innovations?  One authoritative source of oversight and coordination is the law, which lays down rules for admissible conduct in the light of the common good.”  Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ (177)

Pope Francis’ words, written in 2015 are still relevant today, maybe even more so.  We have a local opportunity to respond to those words with action!  The 2025 Eastern Washington Legislative Conference entitled “What Does It Mean to be Prophetic?” is that entity.  The keynote will be a panel featuring indigenous leaders:  Dr Michel of Upper Columbia United Tribes, Caj Matheson of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe natural resources department, and Margo Hill of the Spokane Tribe, Eastern Washington University urban planning and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.  We urge each of you to come and listen to the wisdom of our indigenous brothers and sisters, who have inhabited and cared for this land for thousands of years. They have much to say to us as we experience more and more challenges in the face of climate change.  This panel, along with questions and discussion, will comprise the morning.  Lunch is provided for those who register.   The afternoon will give us the opportunity to attend a choice of briefings including:  recycling, GTN pipeline, housing, AI, racial equity, education, refugees & immigrants and advocacy know-how.  Bills coming before the Washington State Legislature will be discussed, as well.

You won’t want to miss this chance to be more informed in order to have a hand in molding a future that incorporates social justice and the common good.  See flyer below for more info.

To register by January 21 call 509-535-1813, email event@thefigtree.org or sign up online here: https://secure.givelively.org/event/the-fig-tree/2025-legislative-conference

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing with us!

” Make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is despair let me bring hope.”  “I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me”.   Be a Pilgrim of Hope to help the stranger.  For example, help Catholic Charities Immigration Services, give a warm smile and an acknowledging nod to someone passing by, provide clean, gently used clothing to Goodwill or Global Neighborhood or your favorite thrift store.  “As long as you did it to one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it to Me”.

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us!
