February 8, 2026 – 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Holy Communion & Confirmation Sacramental Preparation Meeting  February 8

There will be a meeting after Mass on Sunday, February 8th  for families who have children ready to receive the sacraments of 1st Holy Communion and Confirmation.  This will be an informational meeting about the sacraments and a schedule of the sessions to prepare, so it is important to attend.  Bishop Daly will celebrate the sacraments of 1st Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Ann on Sunday, April 12 at the 9:00 AM Mass.

Mardi Gras at St. Ann on February 14

It is a tradition at St. Ann to celebrate Mardi Gras on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, as a chance to gather as a community before Lent begins. The St. Ann community will celebrate Mardi Gras after the 3:00 PM Mass on Saturday, February 14. Bring your Valentine for a fun night out! Join us for a social hour at 4:00 PM, followed by a free meal cooked by some of our talented St. Ann cooks. And there will be karaoke after dinner. All are welcome!

Ash Wednesday and  Prayer & Soup for Lent

This year Ash Wednesday is on February 18th, and there will be a Mass at St. Ann at 5:00 PM.  The theme for Lent is “Waiting with Patience and Purpose”…but our waiting does not need to be passive.  During Lent, we will gather for Prayer & Soup on Fridays at 6:00 PM, beginning on February 27th.  We are looking for volunteers to lead the Stations of the Cross and to make soup.

Prepares  Open Your Heart Appeal  – February 7-8

The 2026 statewide Bishops’ PREPARES Open Your Heart Appeal takes place the weekend of February 7-8.  The Prepares Ministry is a nurturing response and promise of our Church to mothers, fathers, infants, and children in need. A promise of support and care from pregnancy to their child’s fifth birthday – regardless of religious beliefs. This parish-based program offers young families in need vital life affirming services, ensuring that no child is ever abandoned or alone.

Donation packets are available in the entry of the church if you wish to support this ministry.

Eucharistic Ministers Needed

St. Ann has resumed celebrating Communion from the cup along with the host every week, instead of just for Solemnities. In order to continue, we need more volunteers to serve as Eucharistic ministers at each Mass..  If you are interested in serving our community as a Eucharistic minister, please contact Elizabeth in the office at 509 535-3031 or communityofstann@gmail.com

Social Justice Ministry Meeting – February 11

The Social Justice Ministry meets every other month on Zoom.  The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11th. If you are interested in learning more about Social Justice at St. Ann, or getting involved with one of the sub-committees, we invite you to join us at this meeting.  Contact Elizabeth at sjm.stann@gmail.com  for the Zoom link if you’re interested in attending.

Creation Care Corner

The lie persists “that there is an infinite supply of the world’s goods, and this leads to the planet being squeezed dry beyond every limit.”

Data Centers Impact on our lives and the Environment:

Data center developers are increasingly tapping into freshwater resources to quench the thirst of data centers, which is putting nearby communities at risk.  Large data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons per day,  equivalent to the water use of a town populated by 10,000 to 50,000 people.  With larger and new AI-focused data centers, water consumption is increasing alongside energy usage and carbon emissions.  our lives

Data centers have a thirst for water, and their rapid expansion threatens freshwater supplies.  Only 3% of Earth’s water is freshwater, and only 0.5% of all water is accessible and safe for human consumption.  Freshwater is critical for survival.  On average, a human being can live without water for only three days.  Increasing drought and water shortages reduce water availability.  Meanwhile, data center developers are increasingly tapping into surface and underground aquifers to cool their facilities.

Data center water usage closely parallels energy usage and carbon emissions. As data centers use more energy for their typical data center operations and to meet AI requests, they consume larger amounts of water to cool up their processor chips, so as to avoid overheating and potential damage. Similarly, as energy use increases in data centers, so does carbon emissions.
