January 19, 2025 – 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Social Justice Ministry Education Series

The Social Justice Ministry is also putting together an education series called “A Change is Gonna Come” – a song rooted in sorrow and hope.  This series will begin this Sunday, January 26 with a screening of a short film called Mother Kuskokwim, over in the parish house after Mass, followed by discussion..  This film is a short documentary on how climate change affects a Native Alaskan community located in the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta.  The education series will continue in February with a two part talk about the issue of Christian Nationalism on Sunday February 2nd and 16th.

Catholic Schools Week – January 26 – February 1

The Catholic School Collection kicks-off this Sunday, January 26th, which coincides with the first day of Catholic Schools Week.  Watch for a letter from Bishop Daly inviting us to participate in this collection. This year’s collection will be used for tuition assistance in our K-8 Catholic schools. All contributions, no matter the amount, will help to shape future leaders of the Church.

A donation envelope will be included with the letter from Bishop Daly. Extra envelopes can be found next to the bulletins next week. Please prayerfully consider a financial contribution to this year’s Catholic School Collection.

Below is a thank you from our parish school – All Saints.

Get Reminders About Parish Events

If you would like to receive text or email reminder messages about upcoming parish events we have signed up for a new program called “Remind” that is very easy to sign up for.  Just text saintanncc to 81010 – or follow this link https://www.remind.com/join/saintanncc – and sign up as a “student” to join.

St. Ann Corner Laundry

The Corner Laundry in the parish hall is now operational!  Father Patrick would like to bless the laundry room after Mass on Saturday – so please join us!  We are grateful for the very generous grant from Avista that has allowed us to open this laundry for our neighbors at Sunday Lunch to use. Thank you to all those who have worked so hard to get this project up and running, and for those who are staffing the Corner Laundry.

Bishop Daly at St. Ann – February 23

Save the date –  Bishop Daly will be celebrating Mass at St. Ann on Sunday February 23, at our 9:00 AM Mass.

Immigration Resources from Catholic Charities

In consultation with the most reliable information and Church teaching from the USCCB, the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), and Catholic Charities USA, our local Catholic Charities leaders have offered the basic resources to support our parishioners and community.  Below is a Know Your Rights document they have provided.  Please reach out to the parish staff with any concerns or more resources or assistance.

Creation Care Corner

“For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” (Romans 8:20-22, NIV).

Two great possibilities for education.

We suggest this movie, found on Netflix:  “Buy Now!: The Shopping Conspiracy.” The movie is an eye-opener and rather depressing. Its main message is that companies deliberately manipulate us into buying what we don’t need and make sure that nothing lasts too long so that we continue to buy.

One question the documentary raises is what happens to all those things we buy once we throw or give them away? Where is away? There is no away except here in our world. What do we do with away when it begins to encroach on our world? When it is no longer in Third World countries where we can’t see it?

January 29 – Lessons from Howard Thurman’s Life

Speaker: Dr. Darian Spearman

Date: Wednesday, January 29

Time: 6 pm PT

Location: Hemmingson Auditorium, Gonzaga University and livestreaming online

Free and open to the public

Howard Thurman is well known for his spiritual and intellectual significance to the Civil Rights Movement as well as his influence on Martin Luther King Jr. However, it is only recently that the ecological dimension of his work has begun to be explored. This talk will explore how Thurman articulated his view that life is a process which best actualizes itself through communion as written in The Search for Common Ground. In this book, Thurman seeks to ground the Civil Rights Movement in a vision of life’s unity in response to the challenge of Black nationalism beginning in the 60’s. This talk will discuss the core themes of community, potential and unity as Thurman sees them in the biological processes of individual organisms and interspecies communion. These insights from Thurman will then be applied to dimensions of the contemporary climate crises such as eco-anxiety.

About the speaker: Dr. Darian Spearman is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Gonzaga University. His research interests include Africana Philosophy, Ecophilosophy, Philosophy of Myth, and Philosophy of Religion. His work appears in Philosophy and Global Affairs and the American Philosophical Association’s Black Issues in Philosophy Blog.

Franciscan Corner

“Make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is despair in life, let me bring hope”. “I was ill or imprisoned, and you cared for me”. Be a Pilgrim of Hope and visit those who are lonely.  For example, visit the homebound or someone who is in a rehab facility or hospital, send a get-well card to someone you know is ill.  Be a Pen Pal to someone in prison, pray for and support those affected by violence.  “As long as you did it to one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it to Me”.

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us!
