September 14, 2025 – Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Matthew 25 Ministry – Peace Prayer Vigil on September 14

The Matthew 25 Ministry is hosting a Multi-Faith peace prayer vigil in support of immigrants and refugees on September 14 at 4:00 PM-5:00 PM in front of the Federal Building plaza downtown.  See the flyer below or email sjm.stann@gmail.com for more information.

2nd Collection

It’s the 2nd weekend of the month, which means it is time for our 2nd collection to help those in need in our parish and our neighborhood.  The neighbors we are able to help because of your generosity are so grateful to our community for making it possible. Thank you!

Sunday Lunch – September 14

It is the St. Ann group’s turn to serve Sunday Lunch this Sunday, September 14. The group is still in the need of volunteers to help, so If you would like to help with this ministry, please contact Susan L. 509 995-2542

Meatless Potluck – October 4

Join the Creation Care Team and St. Ann parishioners for a meatless potluck to celebrate the end of the Season of Creation and the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.  Bring a meatless dish to share along with the recipe so each of us can collect new meatless recipes, as we work to cut back on the amount of meat consumed to care for creation.

Bell Tower & Plaster Repair Project

The Bell Tower has been restored and the new rope installed, so the first part of Josh’s project is complete.  Josh was the first to ring the bell at both Masses this past weekend, and parishioners voiced great joy in our being able to be called to Mass by the bells once again.  Thank you to everyone who donated their time and money for this project.  Josh updated the parish at the end of Mass, and said that after the Samosas fundraiser last Sunday, he believed we have reached our goal.  Work on the plaster repair inside the church will begin in October.

Saint Icons

Parishioner Jim Bates has created many Saint Icons for members of the Swahili community, and they have extra icons they would like to share with the parish.  If you would like one, they will be in the front pew. Thank you, Jim, for sharing these beautiful pieces of art with our community!

Surprise for Fr. Max from the Swahili Community

A group of women from the Swahili Choir surprised Father Max at the end of the Swahili Mass on Sunday with a gift of vestments from Kenya.  This was a gift to thank him for his helping Father Patrick by celebrating Mass at St. Ann while Father Patrick was away this summer.  Father Max was very surprised and touched by this gift.  We look forward to seeing the new vestments the next time Father Max celebrates Mass at St. Ann!

Salam Maria fundraiser

The book “Salam Maria” – which is “Hail Mary” in Swahili – is available for a $10 donation in the front pew of the church, or in the parish office.  This fundraiser was started by Grace, a member of the Swahili community, and the money raised will go towards helping youth in rural Kenya.  Although the title of the book is in Swahili, the book is in English and is an informative resource for praying the rosary.

Annual Catholic Appeal

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal so far. Your gift on behalf of St. Ann is deeply appreciated. This year our parish has a goal of raising $39,653.00 for the Appeal. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the Annual Catholic Appeal this year, and please mark your donation for St. Ann Spokane so that we get credit for your donation towards our goal. If you did not receive a letter and donation envelope in the mail, we have extra envelopes next to the bulletins in the church.

Creation Care Corner

“The work of the Church seeks not only to remind everyone of the duty to care for nature, but at the same time she must above all protect (hu)mankind from self-destruction.”   Laudato Si’ 79

“Beef demand rising even at higher prices”   This was a headline of a recent story in the Spokesman Review.  As you might think, we were very dismayed.  One would think that with the price of beef soaring to nearly double what it cost during the pandemic, that the populace would consume less…way less.  But that is not the case.  A recent report by an entity called Co-Bank surmised that the consumption increased due to a heightened interest in dietary protein.  The United States has a record low number of cattle which had beef prices high before, but now a huge portion of our beef comes from Brazil.  With the new tariffs, the average of $8.90 per pound nationally will continue to rise.

Our dismay is not necessarily the price but the growth!  And especially how detrimental it is to the environment no matter where it is grown.  The land, the water, the degradation of the Amazonian rainforest, the methane that livestock produce…all of these contribute to the self-destruction of humankind.  Thus our reason that we, St. Ann Parish, here in Spokane will continue to offer a meatless potluck every year during the Season of Creation.  We will, by eating one meatless meal together and sharing our recipes with one another for future use in our own homes make the tiniest of dents in an unhealthy lifestyle that is abusing our planet.

Meatless Potluck:  Feast of St. Francis, October 4 after Saturday Mass.

For Our Common Home Lecture Series…Fall 2025

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing these reflections with us.

Franciscan Corner

Today is the best of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. On Wednesday, Franciscan celebrate the day Francis received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his body. At the beginning of his conversion, the cross spoke to Francis: go, rebuild… At the end of his life, he received the marks of the crucifixion on his body. In between he conformed his life to that of Jesus so much that he was transformed, he became like Christ, not only inwardly, but outwardly as well. We become what we love! What is it, or who is it that we love?

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us.
