Parish Clean-Up Day –  April 5

Join us on Saturday, April 5th at 10:00 AM in the church for a parish clean up day to get the church cleaned up and ready for Easter!  We will provide cleaning supplies and snacks – just show up ready to help.  This is a great chance to get to know fellow parishioners.

Swahili Mass – April 6

St. Ann celebrates Mass in Swahili on the first Sunday of each month. Join us on Sunday April 6th for this joyful celebration of Mass. If you would like to join in the offertory procession, items such as tissues, hand soap, and granola bars are useful, as is liquid laundry detergent for the Corner Laundry.  The Swahili Choir also provides the music for Mass on Saturday, April 5th;  the readings & Mass are in English on Saturday

Lenten Communal Penance Service – April 6

The Lenten Communal Penance Service is scheduled for April 6, at 10:30 AM, after the 9:00 AM Mass. Several priests will be available for individual reconciliation at the end of that service.

Creation Care Corner

Pope Francis devotes a subsection in his encyclical Laudato Si’ to “Pollution, waste and the throwaway culture,” saying at one point, “We have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use, reusing and recycling them. A serious consideration of this issue would be one way of counteracting the throwaway culture which affects the entire planet” (22).

Spring Cleaning & Challenges to a Throwaway Culture

Most of us own too much stuff.  In the spring we get that urge to get rid of it, and don’t give a lot of thought to where it goes.  When it leaves our homes, that doesn’t mean it ceases to exist or to be a burden on our common home, planet Earth.  Take care to discern the most ecological disposition of all items you are shedding.

Personal:  When getting rid of clothing and shoes, consider giving to entities whose values you admire, who will pass it along, free of charge, to people who will actually benefit from it. A couple of those non-profits are ‘Our Place Community Outreach, at 1509 College Avenue or the Women’s Closet at the YWCA, at 930 N. Monroe. Maybe do some detective work in your neighborhood to discover other places that would appreciate and pass along those items.

Communal: For household items and furniture,  please consider donating to our own Dignified Workday Project, contact Susan Lopez @ (509)995-2542.  Puzzles and games can be taken to ‘Uncles” in the Valley Mall where you can receive a credit to buy new or used games or puzzles.  If you have a Facebook account, consider posting your items on Facebook Marketplace. Consider shopping there yourself.

Institutional: Take into account where you buy.  Think twice before buying…do I need it? is it just a whim? is it because my neighbor has it? am I looking for quality so it will last and won’t be in the garbage heap in a year’s time? Deal with businesses who care for the environment in manufacturing and all the way to the buyer.  Stay local as much as possible.

Earth Month Activities:  Flyer in the back of the church

Action:  Saturday April 19, at 10 a.m., Spokane River Cleanup @ High Bridge Park

Education:  Tuesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. “Active Hope for a Livable Future: Devesting from Fossil Fuels”.  Gonzaga University Hemmingson Auditorium. (free)

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing with us!

Franciscan Corner

“Make me a channel of your peace…. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope…” Francis, after his encounter with the leper, lived among them, brought them hope. He “did” mercy, he didn’t just talk about it. What does it mean to “do” mercy? Doing is an action. Several years ago, we sang: “They will know we are Christians, by our love, by our love…” They will know we are Christ-followers by our actions of love, by our “doing” love. We will be pilgrims of hope by “doing” hope. Do our actions show we are hopeful? In times of trouble, let us not give into discouragement, let us not give up being hopeful, let us not give up bringing hope to the “leper” in our own life. “Where there is despair, let us bring hope.”

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us!
