March 9, 2025 – 1st Sunday of Lent

Lenten Theme and Events

The theme for Lent this year is “Journey Together with Hope” – following the theme of hope that Pope Francis has suggested for Lent.

  • Prayer and Soup on Fridays begins March 14.  Join us at 6:00 PM for Stations of the Cross followed by a meatless soup meal in the parish hall. Sign up sheets for volunteers for soup and for prayer leaders and readers will be available this weekend at Mass, or you can contact the parish office to sign up.

  • The Lenten Reconciliation Service is scheduled for April 6, after the 9:00 AM Mass.  (at about 10:30 AM).  Several priests will be available for individual reconciliation at the end of that service.

  • “Rice Bowls” from Catholic Relief Services are available for those who would like to use them during Lent.  A Lenten calendar with prayers, stories and actions is included with each “rice bowl”.

Daylight Saving Time Begins – March 9th

Daylight Saving Time begins on March 9th.  Remember to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed the night before!

St. Ann Mardi Gras – Thank You!

Thank you to all the volunteers who made our Mardi Gras so special this year – from those who decorated the hall on Friday, to our wonderful cooks who spent their Saturday making a wonderful meal and serving up delicious food for all of us, to our Royal Family – Luisa & Lucia – for welcoming us all to Mardi Gras, and all our talented singers for entertaining us with karaoke.  We especially thank all those who came to celebrate Mardi Gras with us – we appreciate you all!

Sunday Zoom Prayer Service Time Change – March 9th

On March 9th, the Sunday Zoom prayer service time will change back to 7:00 PM, to give people more time to enjoy the daylight in the spring and summer.  The Zoom link is included below the calendar in the email version of the virtual bulletin each week.  If you are interested in being added to the email list for the Zoom prayer service, contact the parish office.

2nd Collection – March 8 & 9

It’s the 2nd weekend of the month, which means it’s time for our 2nd collection to help those in need in our parish and neighborhood.  We are receiving an increase in calls from our neighbors asking for help, and they are appreciative of your generosity that allows us to offer assistance.  There will be collection baskets at the doors at the end of Mass, or you can donate to our social concerns fund on tithely.  Thank you!

Prayer for Creation

The Climate Care Team leads a prayer for creation on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 8:15 AM in the Chapel.  Join them on Sunday, March 16, for time to pray for our earth.

Bishop Daly at St. Ann – March 16

Bishop Daly will be celebrating Mass at St. Ann on Sunday March 16, at our 9:00 AM Mass.

Social Justice Ministry Meeting – March 19

A reminder to members of the Social Justice Ministry that there is a meeting on March 19 at 6:30 PM on Zoom.  If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, contact the parish office.

Cravens Coffee – Price Increase

The cost of Cravens Coffee that we purchase for parish use has increased in price. The cost of the  St. Ann blend coffee that is available for parishioners to purchase (which helps us keep our contract with Cravens Coffee) is now $11.00 a pound.  Thank you for your understanding.

Safety & Security at St. Ann

Due to concerns about safety and security at St. Ann, the staff has decided to change the door codes for the buildings on our campus.  The new safety policy is that only staff will have the codes for the church and parish house. Please contact Elizabeth or Dianne to arrange entry into these spaces for meetings, etc.

Get Reminders About Parish Events

If you would like to receive reminder messages about upcoming parish events, so you don’t hear about events after the fact – we have a new tool to help.  We are using a program called “Remind” that is very easy to sign up for.  Just text saintanncc to 81010 – or follow this link https://www.remind.com/join/saintanncc – and sign up as a “student” to join.

Creation Care Corner

“The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development for we know that things can change.”  Laudato Si’ 11

We invite you to join us at the beginning of Lent to dwell on the following examine throughout the season.

An Ecological Examination of Conscience

By Franciscan writers Ilia Delio, Keith Douglas Warner, and Pamela Wood

  1. Is my whole life centered on God’s overflowing love in my life, revealed through Jesus and through all of creation?

  2. Do I accept with a grateful heart the gifts of God’s goodness and diversity in creation?

  3. Do I pray for the forgiveness of sins between humans and the created world, and for the healing and reconciliation of our broken relationship with creation?

  4. Have I used my God-given gifts to honor and protect the diverse, interdependent, fragile nature of all life and to preserve it for all future beings?

  5. Have I stolen from or damaged the habitat of other creatures by wasting or consuming more than I need?

  6. Do I seek to eliminate from the world whatever keeps all creatures from their full development intended by the Creator: pollution, greed, overconsumption, loss of habitat, disease, war,  extinction of species, oppressive laws and structures?

  7. Have I encouraged others to take care for creation seriously?

Thank you to the Creation Care Team for sharing with us!

Franciscan Corner

“Make me a channel of your peace… where there’s despair in life let me bring hope….” In Pennsylvania during Lent 1975, an ecumenical response to the problem of world hunger began. The following year Catholic Relief Services adopted the Rice Bowl collection as a national program and in 1977 the Bishops approved the Lenten Rice Bowl as the official program of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Francis, the beggar of Assisi, used to go from house to house begging for food. Would you have given him food? Today there are people in our city, in our country, in our world begging for food. Take Action: Pick up a cardboard rice bowl from the parish, fill it with monies so CRS can bring food to those who are food insecure, for those who are starving in other countries. Be a pilgrim of hope and help feed the hungry you see on your tv screen or on the Spokane city streets.

Thank you to Sr. Joanne for sharing these reflections with us!
